Regular Student

Admission to the Postgraduate Program in Civil Engineering/UFSC as a regular student will be subject to approval in the Selection Notice.


  • PPGEC is a Stricto Sensu postgraduate program, master’s degree and doctorate, and does not offer specialization courses.
  • The course is free, there is no registration or monthly fee.

ADMISSION TO PPGEC - ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS
  • To become a regular student, you must be approved in the Selection Process through Selection Notices.
  • For the Master’s level, the selection process occurs twice a year; for admission in the 1st and 3rd quarter. And for the Doctorate level, applications take place in the three academic quarters.
  • As soon as the notice is released, check the start and end dates of the application period, which will be available on the website for registration.
  • Pay attention to the notice regarding the number of vacancies per professor, and the respective lines of research by Areas of Concentration, as well as the method and criteria to be used by the Selection Committee to evaluate the candidates..
  • The criteria for evaluating the candidates are defined by the Selection Committee,and described in the selection notice. Therefore, read the notice carefully, because if any requested document is missing, the application will not be approved by the Selection Committee.

COURSE CURRICULUM

The program has a unified curriculum, that is, the subjects are valid for both the master’s and doctoral courses.

Academic period: there are 3 annual academic periods; trimester, with approximately 12 weeks of duration each trimester.

Classes are all in person, without a fixed shift, therefore, classes are offered from Monday to Friday, in the morning and afternoon shifts and, occasionally, some subjects in the evening.

  • Teaching internship (mandatory for students at doctoral level who are CAPES and FAPESC scholarship holders. Credits are counted as an optional subject) of 1, 2, 3 and up to 4 credits.

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

Upon being approved in the selection process, regular students must apply for enrollment in the first week of the admission period.

  • The first week of each academic period is reserved for enrollment in courses or dissertation/thesis, and the second week is only for adjustments.  If you do not enroll in the first week, it is considered as not having been done.
  • The choice of courses must be made in agreement with the advisor, according to your research theme.
  • According to need or interest, you can take courses in any area of the PPGEC, and possibly in other postgraduate courses at UFSC.

Important:
> Enrollment must be made in ALL academic trimesters until the conclusion of the course.
> When you finish the credits in courses, you must enroll in a Dissertation or Thesis, and this will not be visible as a course, it will only keep your link active in the program.


Enrollment procedures

Enrollment in PPGEC courses: enrollment in courses of the PPGEC program, with ECV code, must be done via the CAPG/UFSC website, collecting the advisor’s signature, and it is mandatory to deliver the receipt to the PPGEC Secretariat in order to COMPLETE THE ENROLLMENT in the courses chosen in the CAPG system, which will later be included in your transcript.

Enrollment in subjects from another course > for subjects outside the PPGEC, you must fill out the Enrollment Form for a Subject in Another Course,  and deliver the completed and signed document to the PPGEC SECRETARIAT, which will include your name on the attendance list for the subject provided, and already insert it in your transcript. 


ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS

  • For each notice, PPGEC has a reduced number of Social Demand scholarships (CAPES, FAPESC and CNPq scholarships) that do not meet all the demand from selected candidates.
  • Unfortunately, there is no scholarship for all students to undertake their Postgraduate course. 
  • The PPGEC Scholarship Committee, based on the criteria defined by the Program, is responsible for allocating these scholarships among students.
  • Resolution 02/PPGEC/2020, deals with the selection of scholarship students

CAPES, FAPESC and CNPQ Scholarship Values:

  • Master’s degree: R$1.500,00
  • Doctorate: R$ 2.200,00


ABOUT PROFICIENCY

Master’s degree: English only.
Doctorate: English + a 2nd foreign language (German, Spanish, French or Italian).

For students who will enroll in PPGEC from January 2019 onwards, only the TOEFL ITP certificate (Circular Memorandum no. 32/2014/PROPG) or TOEFL IBT, or IELTS or the certificate issued by DLLE of UFSC will be accepted, according to the decision of the PPGEC Delegated Board of 10/10/2018.

Note: The result of the proficiency exam must be submitted to the PPGEC secretariat by the end of the first year of admission to the PPGEC. This deadline applies to the enrollment date on your transcript. 


ABOUT TEACHING INTERNSHIP
Teaching Internship is a curricular activity carried out as a subject called “Teaching Internship”, defined as the participation of a postgraduate student in Undergraduate Teaching activities at UFSC, under the tutelage of the professor responsible for the subject.
  • It is mandatory for doctoral students who are CAPES and FAPESC scholarship holders.
  • Credits are computed as an optional subject of 1, 2, 3 and up to 4 credits.
  • However, other students, including master’s students, can apply to the PPGEC Council for approval of the teaching internship if they wish.
  • The internship must be developed in partnership with the supervisor.

ABOUT QUALIFICATION

The student applying for the title of Master or Doctor must first submit to the public Qualification Exam session. The presentation of the qualification, in accordance with the PPGEC Regulations, must occur within the following deadline:

  • Master’s degree: up to 14th month of entry into the course
  • Doctorate: up to 24th month of entry into the course

ABOUT DEFENSE
The Final Paper must be defended in a public session, before an examining board, through the issuance of a Defense Ordinance by the Program Coordination. In accordance with the PPGEC Regulations, the defense must be presented within:
  • Master’s degree: up to 24th month of entry into the course
  • Doctorate: up to 48th month of entry into the course

Mandatory requirements for defense

  • Master’s degree: approval of the dissertation project
  • Doctorate: approval of the thesis project + proof of acceptance of publication of 1 (one) article in a journal classified as B1, or higher, by Qualis/CAPES for Engineering I, in force at the time of the defense request, co-authored by the PPGEC advisor

ABOUT DIPLOMA

After completing the corrections required by the board and sending the final work to the UFSC Library, with proof of approval of the deposit, the PPGEC Secretariat will forward the process of requesting the issuance of a diploma to the responsible department DAE/UFSC. And in approximately 30 business days, the diploma will be available for collection at PPGEC 🙂
