PPGEC offers 5 positions in CAPES’ PEC-PG program
PPGEC is offering 5 positions for international students in CAPES’ Student Agreement Program (PEC-PG), with 3 positions for the PhD program and 2 positions for the Master’s program. Applications will be open from August 14 to September 29, 2025, until 5:00 p.m. (Brasília time).
Modalities:
- Full PhD in Brazil
- Sandwich PhD in Brazil
- Full Master’s in Brazil

Duration of the scholarships:
- I – Sandwich PhD: between 6 (six) and 10 (ten) months;
- II – Full PhD: up to 48 (forty-eight) months and
- III – Full Master’s: up to 24 (twenty-four) months.

Application requirements:
- Be a foreign national from a country participating in the Program, as listed below and available on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website: https://www.gov.br/mre/pt-br/assuntos/cultura-e-educacao/temaseducacionais/programas-de-estudo-para-estrangeiros/pec-g/sobre#pais.
- a) Africa (29 countries): South Africa, Angola, Algeria, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, and Zambiaa;
- b) Latin America and the Caribbean (28 countries): Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela;
- c) Asia (10 countries): Bangladesh, China, South Korea, India, Iran, Lebanon, Pakistan, Syria, Thailand, and Timor-Leste; and
- d) Europe (7 countries): Armenia, Bulgaria, France, Hungary, North Macedonia, Poland, and Turkey.
- Not hold Brazilian nationality, dual Brazilian nationality, or the right to Brazilian nationality at the time of application.
- Not hold permanent residence authorization in Brazil;
- Provide proof of completion of a degree that, in the Brazilian system, is considered equivalent to undergraduate studies;
- Reside abroad, in a country participating in the Program;
- Not be enrolled in Brazil in a course at the same level of study as the one being applied for;
- Not be in default with CAPES or listed in any default registries maintained by Federal Public Administration agencies;
- Be able to begin academic activities immediately, in compliance with the deadlines established by the Graduate Program and those set forth in this call;
- Have an up-to-date Lattes curriculum; candidates not yet registered on the Lattes platform must register through the link: https://www.gov.br/pt-br/servicos/cadastrar-seno-curriculo-lattes;
- Have a registration on the ORCID platform and include the identifier in CAPES’ online application form; candidates not yet registered on the platform must register via the link https://orcid.org;
- Have fulfilled the required interval, that is, have remained in their country of origin or residence for at least 2 (two) years after:
a) obtaining a Brazilian diploma, in the case of candidates who graduated from the PEC-G program or those who received a scholarship from a Brazilian funding agency to pursue undergraduate studies in Brazil; and
b) obtaining a master’s degree (professional or academic), in the case of candidates who received a scholarship from a Brazilian funding agency, including former CAPES or PEC-PG scholarship holders of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). - Not have previously been awarded a scholarship under the CAPES “Move la America” program;
- Not have been awarded a Sandwich PhD or Full PhD scholarship by a federal public agency in this or any other previously completed PhD program, in the case of PhD applications (Sandwich or Full)
- Not have been awarded a Sandwich Master’s or Full Master’s scholarship by a federal public agency in this or any other previously completed Master’s program, in the case of Full Master’s applications.
- Not hold a doctoral degree, for candidates in all modalities.
Revalidation or recognition of a foreign diploma will not be required for candidates selected in the PEC-PG program.
The candidate must indicate their language proficiency in the application form. This information will be assessed by the Graduate Program responsible for hosting the scholarship recipient. The evaluation will consider the language option previously communicated by the Graduate Program and the list of available positions.
The selected candidate will be responsible for the travel to Brazil and for covering their living expenses in the country until the first scholarship payment is received.
At the time of application, the following documents and information must be submitted for all modalities:
I – official photo identification of the candidate;
II – proof of residence abroad, such as utility bills (water, electricity, etc.) or other documents verifying the candidate’s place of residence;
III – valid ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) at the time of application, to be provided directly in the application form;
IV -Research project in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, necessarily including the following items: a) introduction; b) general and specific objectives; c) justification for pursuing the program in Brazil, considering the installed capacity in the country of origin or residence, clarifying the reasons for choosing the Brazilian Graduate Program (PPG) as the destination; d) expected results and potential for expansion; e) planned academic and scientific production targets; f) description of how the knowledge acquired in Brazil will be disseminated in the country of origin or residence; g) description of the research’s importance for the development of the specific field in the country of origin or residence; h) work schedule, detailing the activities to be carried out during the study period, including field research, if applicable, specifying the location and planned period for these activities; and i) bibliographic references.
V – Declaration of employment, if applicable, issued by the organization or institution where the candidate works, with a date after the publication of the call in the Official Federal Gazette (DOU), in Portuguese, Spanish, or English;
VII – Memorial (Annex III) prepared by the candidate (in Portuguese, Spanish, or English), written succinctly in up to 600 (six hundred) words, presenting:
- a) the candidate’s skills and motivations for pursuing a Full PhD, Sandwich PhD, or Full Master’s in Brazil, the candidate’s professional development process, describing experiences in teaching, research, and extension activities, including during undergraduate and master’s studies, if applicable;
- b) academic and professional experience in the field of interest; e c) any special circumstances applicable to the candidate’s background.
For the Full PhD in Brazil modality, in addition to the documents listed, the candidate must submit:
I – Diplomas: a) undergraduate diploma, proof of completion, or proof of medical residency (for candidates in the medical field), front and back, in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, or accompanied by a simple translation into one of these languages; and b) master’s diploma, if applicable, or a declaration from the Master’s program coordinator indicating the expected date of dissertation defense, front and back, in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, or accompanied by a simple translation into one of these languages;
II – academic transcript or equivalent document showing complete grades or marks from undergraduate and master’s studies, in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, or accompanied by a simple translation into one of these languages.
For the Full Master’s in Brazil modality, in addition to the documents listed, the candidate must submit:
I – undergraduate diploma or proof of completion, front and back, in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, or accompanied by a simple translation into one of these languages;
II – academic transcript or equivalent document showing complete grades or marks from undergraduate studies, in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, or accompanied by a simple translation into one of these languages;
All documents must be submitted in PDF format without passwords and included directly during the application process. Documents hosted on links or cloud storage will not be accepted. It is recommended to avoid using images, photographs, charts, or other elements that increase file size, as CAPES’ system will not accept files exceeding 5 (five) megabytes.
